Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department

Richard joined the department in 1942 as a junior member. In August, the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department made Richard an Honorary Lifetime Member, for his previous service to the department and for being a valuable resource for documenting our company's history.
On Thursday, September 18, 2014, Phil was awarded the Norris J. Beard Junior Firefighter of the Year for 2013 during the Prince George's County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association's Annual Convention.
will roll, lights will flash and sirens will sound in celebration this weekend in Capitol Heights, Maryland. The Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate its 100th birthday with a parade through the Town of Capitol Heights on July 12, 2014.

PFC Julius Vajda Completes Mission, Earns a Bronze Star
July 29,1944 --PFC Julius Vajda, CHVFD member, was tasked as a runner to take valuable information about enemy positions to a nearby platoon. During his mission he dodged enemy fire and took cover by jumping into a foxhole, not knowing it was occupied by a German soldier. Vajda overpowered the soldier and took him prisoner. He continued on his mission with the prisoner. His actions on this day are credited with saving lives and he was later awarded the Bronze Star.
