Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary Mourn the Passing of Mary Russell

It is with great sadness that we report, that on October 23, 2009 Mary Russell passed away at the age of 50 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mary joined the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary in 1991. She had served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary from 1997 through 2005 and again from 2008 until the time of her death. In September 1999, Mary was inducted into the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association Ladies Auxiliary’s Hall of Fame.

She also joined as an administrative member of the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department in 2000. Mary served two terms as Vice President. In addition, she served on numerous committees for the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association and the Maryland State Fireman’s Association and their Ladies Auxiliaries.

Like many departments, the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department is home to many families who choose to serve their community; The Russell family is one of those families who make serving their community a family affair. Mary’s husband, Bob, is a Past President of the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association and currently a Captain with the department. Two of Mary’s children, Tommy and Sara, are also volunteer firefighters in Prince George’s County.

Our deepest condolences go out to the Russell Family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
