Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department Celebrates National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week

Protecting the Community’s Treasures: Safety Tips and Limited Health Screening for Older Adults

On Friday, May 21, 2010, the Capitol Heights Volunteer Fire Department completed our second and final event for National EMS Week 2010. Personnel performed blood pressure screenings at the Gateway Village, located at 505 Suffolk Avenue. Gateway Village is a senior citizen apartment building and houses 85 residents. In addition, to the blood pressure screenings we discussed various ways older adults could make their homes safer and prevent falls.

Approximately 25 blood pressure screenings were completed. Some residents because we had to tend to a few emergency calls and some were off getting ready for the “Senior Prom” being held at Gateway Village. We promised to come back and take care of any remaining residents that wanted blood pressure checked.

The first National EMS Week event was held at the First Baptist Church of Capitol Heights where we focused on children. We discussed leaving children in hot vehicles and window safety.

Thank you to all who participated in making these events successful.
